Techno-economic analysis on the construction of a battery plant connected to an operating wind farm to improve the profitability of the standalone wind farm, analyzing the potential of different market strategies in Germany
This thesis delves into the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with operational wind farms to leverage arbitrage opportunities in Germany's day-ahead and intraday auction electricity markets. Through comprehensive analysis and optimization modeling, the study evaluates the economic feasibility of various BESS configurations and operational strategies, focusing on their application in hybrid power plants (wind + BESS). The investigation explores four distinct bidding strategies in the day-ahead and intraday markets, aiming to optimize the charging and discharging cycles of the BESS to maximize profitability. Initial scenarios concentrate on utilizing the BESS during periods of wind farm grid curtailment, expanding to consider direct wind farm contributions to the grid. Among the strategies analyzed, those exploiting market price disparities show varying levels of success, with particular emphasis on scenarios that adjust bidding based on daily average and median electricity prices. Results reveal that none of the configurations or strategies attain profitability indices above 100%, with Strategy 3, focusing on selective operation based on average daily prices, emerging as the most favorable. This approach promises increased economic benefits by minimizing wear on the BESS, suggesting a more sustainable operating model. However, limitations in charging the BESS at minimal costs from the wind farm and constraints during high market price periods highlight the challenges in maximizing BESS profitability within hybrid projects. The study underscores the crucial role of strategic BESS operation in enhancing the economic viability of hybrid wind-BESS power plants. It concludes that smaller BESS configurations, which are better able to navigate the complexities of market prices and power supply limitations, present a more promising investment opportunity compared to larger setups. This work sets a foundation for future exploration in optimizing hybrid energy systems, emphasizing the importance of adapting to market dynamics and technological advancements to improve the integration and profitability of renewable energy sources and energy storage solutions.
