Democratizar el concepto de democracia

Abstract

Que el voto esté definido por las identidades sociales –y no tanto por la ideología o preferencias individuales– supone que, quizá, habríamos de cambiar el foco si queremos optimizar el potencial de la democracia como legítimo régimen de convivencia. Quizá ya no resulte tan importante cuán bien informado esté el votante, sino más bien hasta qué punto los colectivos sociales son capaces de organizarse, de coalicionar entre sí y de enviar las indicaciones oportunas a sus miembros sobre por qué partido optar. Sería interesante, en cualquier caso, que esto formara parte de una reflexión social conjunta, y para ello es imprescindible democratizar el concepto de democracia.

The fact that voting is defined by social identities - and not so much by ideology or individual preferences - means that we may have to change the focus if we want to optimise the potential of democracy as a legitimate regime of coexistence. Perhaps it is no longer so important how well-informed the voter is, but rather to what extent social collectives are able to organise themselves, to align with each other and to send the appropriate indications to their members as to which party to opt for. It would be interesting in any case if this were part of a joint social reflection, and for this it is essential to democratise the concept of democracy.
