Abstract

Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) es sin duda una de las figuras cuya actividad y pensamiento resultan claves en la configuración del mundo contemporáneo. Conocido también como Mahatma -'alma grande'-, sus convicciones, firmemente arraigadas en el ascetismo y la autodisciplina, así como en la no-violencia y la rectitud en el comportamiento, no sólo abrieron una vía fundamental en la lucha anticolonialista que, recurriendo a menudo a la desobediencia civil, acabaría llevando a la India a alcanzar su independencia del Imperio británico, sino que proporcionaron, y proporcionan aún hoy, unas herramientas o recursos preciosos al activismo político. Al igual que el volumen de Martin L. King ya publicado en esta colección, el presente reúne una selección de sus discursos, ensayos y textos más célebres e importantes, acompañada de un completísimo estudio introductorio que da cuenta cabal de la evolución y el desempeño de Gandhi a lo largo de su existencia, analiza los elementos clave de su pensamiento y de su estrategia política, y pone de manifiesto su relevancia a la hora de hacer frente a los desafíos del mundo del siglo XXI.

Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) is undoubtedly one of the figures whose activity and thought have played a key role in shaping the contemporary world. Also known as Mahatma - "great soul"-, his convictions, firmly rooted in asceticism and self-discipline, as well as in nonviolence and righteousness in behavior, not only opened a fundamental path in the anti-colonialist struggle that, often resorting to civil disobedience, would eventually lead India to achieve its independence from the British Empire, but also provided, and still provide today, precious tools or resources for political activism. Like the Martin L. King volume already published in this collection, this volume brings together a selection of his most famous and important speeches, essays and texts, accompanied by a comprehensive introductory study that gives a full account of Gandhi's evolution and performance throughout his life, analyzes the key elements of his thought and political strategy, and highlights his relevance in facing the challenges of the 21st century world.
