¿Debemos intentar resolver la conjetura de Markoff?

Abstract

En este artículo explicaremos en qué consiste la conjetura de Markoff, una conjetura de casi 100 años de antigüedad, y muy difícil de resolver, sobre las soluciones enteras de la ecuación x 2 + y 2 + z 2 = 3xyz. Daremos una breve historia donde veremos los resultados principales empezando con el célebre teorema de Markoff, su relación con varios temas de naturaleza diversa (espectros de Markoff y Lagrange, fracciones continuas, aproximaciones por racionales, árboles, palabras de Christoffel, grupos de ideales,. . . ), y finalizando con algunos casos particulares de la conjetura cuya demostración es particularmente sencilla.

In this article, we will explain what the Markoff conjecture consists of, a conjecture that is almost 100 years old and very difficult to solve, about the integer solutions of the equation x² + y² + z² = 3xyz. We will give a brief history where we will see the main results starting with the famous Markoff theorem, its relationship with various topics of diverse nature (Markoff and Lagrange spectra, continued fractions, rational approximations, trees, Christoffel words, ideal groups, ...), and ending with some particular cases of the conjecture whose demonstration is particularly simple.
