Abstract

In Michel Henry’s work it could seem that the communication and relationship between subjects is only a late concern of his philosophical reflection. This is understandable since in his main works, from Le Bonheur de Spinoza of 1942-43 to Material phenomenology (from the beginning of the nineties), this problem was not dealt with explicitly or in depth. It is precisely with this latter book that Henry finally offers a study of Husserl’s fifth meditation and introduces de term phatos-with. Nevertheless, the interpretation of Henry’s apparent late interest in intersubjectivity is contradicted by a thorough analysis of his most relevant writings from the very first to The Essence of Manifestation. Our investigation considers Life in Henry as a self-givenness always in act in the incarnate subject: in the measure that the subject experiences it consciously then the relationship with the others subjects is also experienced as a gift and as givenness in this same Life. We prove the presence of this view right from his earlier writings. The posthumous publications of several notes and drafts from the Montepellier philosopher by the Fonds Michel Henry, confirms the approach of our research. The metaphysical experience is a tool belonging to the tradition of reflexive philosophy, specially since Jean Wahl published his book with that very same title. We find this tool to be fundamental in understanding Michel Henry’s thought. The philosophical and metaphysical concepts of each system are, in their great majority, associated with a particular metaphysical experience in which their author bases his or her reasoning, and develops then his or her vision of the subject or of the world. It is possible to argue the existence of a specific metaphysical experience at the root of a philosophical scheme even when its main thinkers did not make it explicit. In Henry though this is a simple task: from his very first writing, Le Bonheur de Spinoza, we are drawn to the relation between Baruch Spinoza’s search for happiness and the concepts he uses in his line of thought. Moreover, the young Henry brilliantly points to desire as a guide for thought in Spinoza’s reasoning, making of it a prelude to his concept of flesh as the primordial place for the manifestation of essence. The argument in favour of intersubjectivity in our author would not be sustainable without mentioning the clear cut distinction between the two ontological regions of exteriority and the absolute subject. This distinction is emphasised in The Essence of Manifestation but is in fact already present in Philosophy and phenomenology of the Body. It gives rise to a new philosophical discipline that considers the existence of an ontological duality in which the realm of the absolute subject is the primordial and original one in which Life is manifested and enables all manifestations. The originating phenomenological distance is found in this sphere of the absolute subject: it differs radically from spatial distance and it founds otherness itself from the absolute Soi. The self-givenness of Life is immanent, in the flesh, but it is at same time other from oneself. The self-givenness of Life is also a metaphysical experience of touching the absolute, leading us to the relationship with the other and others moi, a relation that shows itself to precede all exteriority and ek-tasis. Inspired by Henry we have identified a third ontological region that consists precisely of the relationship between the subjects that live in their flesh (men and women). This region has its own channels of communication which escape the logic of the exteriority, even though they use it. Edith Stein’s Einfühlung assists us in the discovery of the human subject, since it becomes a proof that the third ontological region has special characteristics. Trust (or lack of it) is one of them, being imbedded in words and gestures that still belong on one hand to exteriority, but on the other hand are also pathways in the pathos-with.
