Abstract

Qatar's 2022 winter World Cup has been surrounded by controversy mainly due to human and labor rights issues in the country. However, there has also been a lot of communication efforts by the Qatari government to improve its image abroad. That is why I have chosen the communication policy behind the Qatar World Cup as the topic for my Final Degree Project (FDP). The aim of my research is to find out whether Qatar's communication efforts have been effective as a soft power strategy, i.e., whether they have succeeded in improving the country's image abroad and whether they have influenced public opinion about the country. To carry out this research, I will analyze the different strategies implemented by Qatar, the role of key actors in the realization of the World Cup (FIFA, Qatari Government, International Community...), a literary analysis of relevant concepts for proper political communication and, in addition, I will use a non-representative survey to collect data on the opinion of the general population about Qatar and its image abroad. I will also conduct a study of news published by different media to analyze the media coverage of the country and assess whether there has been any change in the public perception of Qatar during the period leading up to the World Cup. In summary, my FDP will focus on the communication policy behind the Qatar World Cup and will explore whether Qatar's efforts to improve its image have been effective as a soft power strategy.
