Abstract

With this work, we aim to investigate the negative impact of greenwashing on corporate reputation once this practice has been exposed. To achieve this goal, we will first examine the background of sustainability, we will also study the definition of sustainability and corporate sustainability, and their relationship with ESG criteria (environmental, social, and governance). Additionally, we will analyze current sustainable initiatives to understand why companies resort to greenwashing. We will focus on greenwashing, exploring its various modalities and the motivations driving it. Additionally, we will address the most important point, which will focus on studying the impact and consequences of greenwashing once it has been uncovered. To illustrate its impact on corporate reputation more practically, we will analyze a real case. Finally, we will explore greencontrolling, a measure designed to prevent greenwashing. We will approach greencontrolling from two perspectives: at the corporate and governmental levels, highlighting strategies to mitigate the risk of greenwashing and promoting sustainable practices in both the private and public sectors.
