Analysis of the Decarbonization Potential of Heat Pumps in the Spanish Energy System and Their Impact on the Most Vulnerable Families

Abstract

Este trabajo busca analizar y evaluar el papel de las bombas de calor en la transición hacia un sistema energético descarbonizado en España a través del modelo openMASTER desarrollado por el Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica (ITT) de la Universidad Pontificia Comillas. Gracias a la nueva parametrización de la bomba de calor desarrollada en este proyecto, se logra una imagen más exhaustiva y actualizada del potencial de esta tecnología. En base a este análisis, el número de instalaciones aerotérmicas crecerá en 2,73 millones entre 2025 y 2050, mientras que las geotérmicas aumentarán de 4.075 a 9.656 en el mismo periodo. Para superar el desafío en su implantación en relación con la pobreza energética, se requiere una inversión pública sustancial, estimada en 300,8 millones de euros anuales entre los años 2025 y 2050. Aunque la implementación de esta tecnología requiera de subvenciones iniciales para posicionarse de manera competitiva, en el largo plazo se espera una considerable reducción del coste de inversión inicial como consecuencia de las economías de escala y su progresivo grado de madurez, haciéndola accesible a los hogares más vulnerables. En definitiva, estos resultados se presentan como una argumentación sólida a favor de la bomba de calor como tecnología clave en la descarbonización del sector residencial, así como una oportunidad estratégica, especialmente para los hogares más vulnerables.This study aims to analyze and evaluate the role of heat pumps in the transition towards a decarbonized energy system in Spain through the openMASTER model developed by the Institute for Research in Technology (ITT) at Comillas Pontifical University. Thanks to the new heat pump parameterization developed within this project, a more comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the potential of this technology is achieved. Based on this analysis, the number of aerothermal installations is projected to grow by 2.73 million between 2025 and 2050, while geothermal installations are expected to increase from 4,075 to 9,656 over the same period. Addressing the challenge of implementation in the context of energy poverty requires substantial public investment, estimated at €300.8 million annually between 2025 and 2050. Although the deployment of this technology necessitates initial subsidies to position it competitively, in the long term, a significant reduction in upfront investment costs is anticipated due to economies of scale and its progressive maturation, making it more accessible to the most vulnerable households. Ultimately, these findings provide robust evidence supporting heat pumps as a key technology for the decarbonization of the residential sector, as well as a strategic opportunity, particularly for the most vulnerable households.
