Experimental testing and data analysis of cervical airbags used in bicycle helmets

Abstract

Cycling has become very popular in recent years, despite this, cyclists still represent one of the most vulnerable groups, being the only one that has not managed to improve safety conditions to reduce the number of deaths since 2010.It is true that head and brain injuries have been extensively studied over the years, refining helmet designs to ensure safety improvements, the same cannot be said for cervical injuries. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the 3 cervical airbag prototypes in the prevention of cervical hyperextension injuries. A total of 21 experiments have been carried out with the 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy. The effectiveness of the cervical airbags was evaluated against tests without an airbag to determine the degree of improvement achieved. The most relevant differences were found for the hyperextension angles, where the peak values go from 50.06±1.73 for the cases without airbags to 41.99±1.29, 37.20±2.05, and 46.53±2.21 for airbags 1, 2, and 3, respectively. No significant differences were observed for the linear and angular acceleration peaks, as well as for the HIC and BrIC values. The studies conducted are presented as a good line of study and a basis for the development of future projects.
