Abstract

This Master's Thesis consists on the design and planning of an innovative teaching program for second-year ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) students at the IDEO School, focusing on the periods of Medieval and Modern History from a perspective that transcends the mere accumulation of isolated facts. This proposal, which delves into two teaching units focused on the Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula, stems from the conviction that a structured method is vital on guaranteeing educational excellence and avoiding improvisation. To this end, the work is based on the current legal framework established by the LOMLOE (Organic Law on the Modification of the Organic Law on Education) and Decree 65/2022 of the Community of Madrid. The design of this document draws on both the author's personal interest and his specialized background in Arabic and Islamic Studies, allowing him to contribute a creative, dynamic, and multicultural perspective essential for addressing the Middle Ages and the complexity of Al-Andalus and its legacy in the Iberian Peninsula. A central tenet of this planning is the challenge to traditional historiographical narratives, often biased by nationalist perspectives, which reduce the Middle Ages to an uninterrupted war under the concept of the Reconquista. In contrast to this simplistic dichotomy, the program aims to highlight the social fluidity, coexistence, and cultural exchanges that defined eight centuries of shared history and that still resonate in our collective identity. Similarly, although the unit on Modern History has not yet been developed, a critical review of the colonization of the Americas is proposed, breaking with the Eurocentric narrative and seeking to integrate the realities of Indigenous peoples. Methodologically, in line with the values of the IDEO School, this paper proposes moving away from the rigid use of textbooks and embracing project-based learning (PBL) and the use of digital tools. This transforms the classroom into a laboratory of citizenship where students construct their own knowledge organically. The ultimate goal, therefore, is to equip students with the critical thinking skills necessary to decipher and understand the reality that surrounds them, valuing diversity and exercising democratic citizenship that is conscious and committed to their social environment.
