Abstract

This paper investigates the presence of speculative bubbles in artificial intelligence stocks using the PSY methodology (Phillips-Shi-Yu), specifically the GSADF test, applied to prices adjusted by fundamental variables: the risk-free interest rate, the rolling systematic beta, and the Capex-to-market-capitalization ratio. The sample covers ten leading technology companies (the Magnificent Seven plus AMD, Oracle, and Palantir) over the period January 2000 to December 2025, allowing for a comparison between the current AI cycle and the dot-com bubble as a historical benchmark. The results show that five of the ten companies exhibit statistically significant explosive behavior at the 5% level: Apple, Tesla, Microsoft, Meta, and Nvidia. However, the most important finding is not how many companies cross the threshold, but when they do. The most intense episodes correspond to economic cycles predating the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022: the iPhone boom for Apple (2012–2013), Model 3 expectations for Tesla (2017), and the Azure cycle for Microsoft (2008 and 2015). Only Meta shows an explosive episode directly linked to the AI boom, while Nvidia produces a diffuse signal that does not reach the 1% significance threshold. The central conclusion is that the stock market rally of 2022–2025 does not reproduce the unambiguous statistical signature of a dot-com-style bubble once the parallel growth of Capex and systematic risk is controlled for. The companies analyzed generate real and growing profits and are committing massive investments in physical infrastructure, which the model captures as fundamental support. The primary risk is not statistical but forward-looking: if the returns that this investment needs to generate do not materialize within the timeframes the market is pricing in, only then can a genuine AI bubble be declared.
