This study analyses the role of artificial empathy in the interaction between people and conversational AI systems, focusing on ChatGPT and Claude. Drawing on literature from psychology, phenomenological philosophy, computer science and marketing research, the study distinguishes human empathy, understood as inner experience and recognition of the other as a subject, from artificial empathy, understood as a computational simulation of the linguistic patterns associated with emotional understanding. It examines empirical evidence on how perceived empathy in chatbots affects user satisfaction and continued use, connecting this effect with OpenAI's subscription-based business model and the global empathic chatbot market. The analysis is complemented by a parallel study applied to ChatGPT and Claude, whose responses reveal both the technical mechanisms of adaptation and the ethical tensions raised by their design. The conclusions identify a central risk: the convergence between commercial incentives and empathic design can turn the appearance of understanding into a retention tool that captures personal data and sustains forms of emotional dependence that would not be possible without empathic simulation.en-GB
