Abstract

This paper investigates the possibility of beating the equity market. To do so, an investing strategy is designed based on the Top-Down methodology. This strategy combines fundamental analysis and market timing techniques. The fundamental study focuses on the Piotroski and Altman criteria, while the study using market timing techniques is supported by technical indicators (Bollinger Bands, Relative Strength Index and moving averages). The obtained results from the strategy reveal that the benchmark has been outperformed by combining both types of analysis. However, fundamental analysis used individually (not combined with market timing techniques) offers maximum returns through the Buy & Hold strategy. In those cases, despite reducing the risk somewhat, the the technical analysis reduces the final profitability. These results refer to the long term. However, in periods of short-term uncertainty, the technical and fundamental combination is the one that offers the best results, avoiding market losses.
