Transgender Athletes in Elite Sport Competitions: Equity and Inclusivity

Un resumen general sería: En los deportes de alta competición generalmente se han separado las pruebas entre hombres y mujeres para lograr un "fair play" en el que individuos con capacidades similares compitieran ante una prueba de dificultad similar. El problema surge en cómo diferenciar hombres y mujeres. A nivel anatómico no siempre resulta distinguible. En particular, nos centramos en el caso de las personas transgénero, es decir, aquellas que con un cuerpo sexual sienten en cambio pertenecer a otro. En estos deportistas, cabe pensar de qué manera proceder a una clasificación justa para respetar sus sentimientos logrando que además sea justa con respecto a las capacidades de sus competidores. En este capítulo se presenta un recorrido cronológico de los diferentes reglamentos en materia de género en deportes de alta competición, revisando todas las consideraciones tenidas en cuenta, desde el reconocimiento de genitales externos, pasando por el cromosoma (XX, XY) hasta la más actual consideración hormonal (niveles de testosterona).

A general summary would be: in elite sports men and women have been frequently splitted to achieve "fair play ", namely, a competition where individuals with similar capacities compete in a similar difficult task. The problem arises in how to differentiate men and women. At the anatomical level it is not always distinguishable. In particular, we focus on the case of transgender people, that is to say, those who were born with a sexual body but feel instead they belong to another. With transgender athletes, we need to think about how to proceed to achieve a fair Split while respecting their feelings as well as a fair competition respecting the competitors' capacities. This chapter presents a chronological tour on the different regulations on gender in high-competition sports, reviewing all considerations taken into account, from the recognition of external genitalia, through the chromosome (XX , XY) to the current hormonal consideration (testosterone levels).
