Aportaciones y limitaciones de la Terapia Focalizada en la Emoción (TFE) al Modelo de Psicoterapia Humanista.

Abstract

La psicoterapia humanista evolucionó desde una tercera fuerza reactiva al psicoanálisis y al conductismo hacia un enfoque con respaldo empírico, transformación impulsada en gran medida por la Terapia Focalizada en la Emoción (TFE) de Greenberg. Sin embargo, la literatura tiende a presentar esta estructuración como una ganancia sin examinar qué elementos del humanismo clásico podrían perderse en el proceso. Esta revisión ha analizado qué aportó la TFE al modelo humanista clásico y cuáles fueron sus limitaciones, con el fin de determinar qué se mantenía, qué se modificaba y qué se perdía. Para ello se realizó una revisión bibliográfica que comparó la TFE con los modelos clásicos de Rogers y la Gestalt en torno a seis ejes: la visión de la persona, el rol del terapeuta, el papel de la emoción, el grado de directividad, la relación terapéutica y las técnicas empleadas en sesión, analizando las continuidades y rupturas en cada uno. Los resultados mostraron que cuatro elementos se mantuvieron: la visión de la persona, las condiciones relacionales rogerianas, la autoridad del cliente sobre su experiencia y la primacía de la relación sobre la técnica. Tres se modificaron: el estatuto de esas condiciones, el rol del terapeuta y la concepción del cambio. Solo uno se perdió en sentido estricto: la no directividad como principio absoluto, sustituida por una directividad selectiva guiada por marcadores. Aunque esta misma estructuración generó tensiones con algunos valores del humanismo clásico, se concluyó que la TFE no supuso una ruptura, sino una transformación interna que dotó al paradigma de estructura, técnica sistematizada y respaldo empírico, lo que evidenció que el rigor científico y la profundidad experiencial no son incompatibles.Humanistic psychotherapy evolved from being a third force reactive to psychoanalysis and behaviorism toward an empirically supported approach, a transformation driven largely by Greenberg’s Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). However, the literature tends to present this structuring as a gain without examining which elements of classic humanism might be lost in the process. This review analyzed what EFT contributed to the classic humanistic model and what its limitations were, in order to determine what was maintained, what was modified, and what was lost. To this end, a literature review was conducted comparing EFT with the classic models of Rogers and Gestalt across six axes: the view of the person, the role of the therapist, the role of emotion, the degree of directiveness, the therapeutic relationship, and the techniques employed in session, analyzing the continuities and ruptures in each. The results showed that four elements were maintained: the view of the person, the Rogerian relational conditions, the client’s authority over their own experience, and the primacy of the relationship over technique. Three were modified: the status of those conditions, the role of the therapist, and the conception of change. Only one was lost in the strict sense: non-directiveness as an absolute principle, replaced by a selective directiveness guided by markers. Although this same structuring generated tensions with some values of classic humanism, it was concluded that EFT did not represent a rupture, but rather an internal transformation that endowed the paradigm with structure, systematized technique, and empirical support, demonstrating that scientific rigor and experiential depth are not incompatible.
