| dc.description.abstract | This paper investigates the distinct effects of oil-specific and global uncertainty shocks on the stock returns of international oil and gas companies. Using monthly data from May 2007 to August 2025, we employ a Dynamic Factor Model on high-frequency volatility indices to construct separate proxies for global uncertainty and idiosyncratic oil uncertainty shocks. The dynamic effects of these shocks are estimated using Smoothed Local Projections. Global uncertainty shocks generate an immediate and homogeneous decline in stock returns across integrated, upstream, and downstream firms. In contrast, the effects of oil-specific uncertainty depend on a firm’s position within the value chain. Upstream firms exhibit the most pronounced responses, integrated firms display intermediate and mixed effects, while downstream companies appear comparatively insulated from oil-market uncertainty. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing global from sector-specific uncertainty when assessing the financial consequences of uncertainty shocks in energy markets. | en-GB |
