Abstract

With the rise of new satellite constellations in the current space race, there has been an increase in the number of bodies orbiting the Earth. With approximately 4,550 operational satellites in orbit, the number of impacts and space debris generated has increased in recent years. The European Space Agency estimates that 36,500 objects with a diameter greater than 10 cm, 1 million objects between 1 cm and 10 cm and 330 million objects between 1 mm and 1 cm are currently in orbit. The objective of this project is the identification of vulnerabilities in constellations of satellites located in low orbits (LEO), applying the Complex Network Theory. The most vulnerable satellites will be searched based on their connections with the rest of the network and their potential risk will be analyzed in terms of possible collisions with other satellites or with space debris that may be found in their orbits. For this purpose, a tool that allows the visualization of the positions of several satellites simultaneously for determined time intervals will be coded in Matlab. After this, it will be possible to see the networks generated by each satellite constellation at specific time instants. Applying the Complex Network Theory, the situation of these networks and the effect that the loss of satellites may have on them will be analyzed iteratively. These data will be crossed with those of space debris and collisions to analyze the points with a higher level of associated risk.
