Abstract

Self-criticism consists of a continuum between two poles. On the one hand, it has an adaptive part that favours the resolution of problems in a healthy way, although research on this area lack some depth. On the other hand, it can become pathological to the individual, who experiences feelings of inferiority and harassment. Research on the latter has found that self-criticism is a phenomenon present in many disorders. Its transdiagnostic nature makes its approach more complex, as the limits with other constructs converge. Regarding its origin, numerous authors have established a strong relationship between the first experiences of the individual with their attachment figures and the development of a self-critical personality, especially in the case of avoidant attachment. In the same way, it has been demonstrated how cultural factors, and especially globalization, considerably affect the appearance of self-criticism as a stable and maladaptive pattern of the person. In spite of existing diverse theories around this phenomenon, like the one by Blatt et al. (1974-2013), or Gilbert et al. (1995-2009), one of the most relevant points is the close relationship that maintains with perfectionism and self-esteem, constructs that until now seemed to share certain similarities, but the complete framework that unites them in a solid way had not been built.
