Abstract

Translating metaphors from a source language to a target language is a complex task, and as such it has been a subject of study for many translators and linguists. And yet, the simultaneous interpretation of metaphors, although extremely complex too, has seldom been studied. Due to this shortage of theorizing, there is a lack of rules or recommendations to tackle the simultaneous interpretation of metaphors. This paper intends to analyze the written translations and the simultaneous interpretations of 100 metaphors pronounced in the European Parliament (EP), so as to observe the strategies that interpreters of the EP possess in order to approach the simultaneous interpretation of metaphors and to compare their approach with the recommendations suggested by translators.
