Abstract

Sir Francis Galton discovered, in a judging competition in which the weight of an ox had to be guessed, that the average of the 900 of observations that he collected was the closest number to the actual weight of the ox. Could it be possible that the amount of individual judgements was a better estimation than the one made by any expert? On the other hand, Eugene Fama declared 63 years later than no one can beat consistently the market, as the price of the stocks already reflect all the available information, so it is not possible to be one step ahead of the market. This would mean that the price of a stock is always the right one, that and it would be built by all the judgements of people investing in that asset. It seems that both theories, as far as they might look one from another, try to deliver a very similar concept, that the average of the total amount of individual judgements is the closest approximation to reality anyone can get. In this academic work the aim is to make a critical and exhaustive analysis of the most important work from both authors, in order to comprehend both investigations separately, so that later they can be compared and applied to the financial markets.
