Not All Grief Is the Same: Presentations of Grieving Clients Attending Emotion-Focused Therapy

Abstract

Research on grief has extensively categorised characteristics that affect the grieving process, such as coping styles and risk factors. However, there remains a relative lack of phenomenological descriptions of the typologies of grief complications. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive set of categories and typologies of grief complications through a qualitative analysis of therapeutic sessions conducted within the framework of Emotion-Focused Therapy for individuals experiencing complicated grief. Using ideal-type analysis within a theoretically informed descriptive-interpretive qualitative approach, the researchers analysed video and transcript data from 26 participants across 76 therapy sessions. The findings identify categories of grief complications across several domains, including the nature of the death, the relationship with the deceased, emotional experiences and emotional difficulties. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how complicated grief manifests in therapeutic contexts.
