Abstract

The large increase in the immigrant population in recent years in Spain, is a challenge to care for mental health level. Increasingly more frequently they access to specialized devices, however, intercultural competence of institutions and professionals, is still insufficient to meet their needs. Provide culturally competent care in many aspects (institutional and structural), exceeds the domain of mental health professionals. The establishment of a solid therapeutic alliance to reach intercultural quality treatment its in their scope. The first objective of this research, is to study the impact of cultural differences between psychotherapists and patients in establishing the therapeutic alliance. The second objective, is to investigate the potential buffer role of intercultural competence of psychotherapists in that impact. To carry them out, we have the cooperation of 22 patients (12 Spanish and 10 immigrants) and 13 psychotherapists. We measure the therapeutic alliance with the questionnaire SOATIF-s (Friedlander, Escudero and Heatherington, 2009) in its version for patients, and intercultural competence of psychotherapists with a built ad hoc questionnarire made for this research The results showed no relationship between therapeutic alliance and cultural differences. Nor between intercultural competence and therapeutic alliance. Still, we consider relevant, due to the methodological limitations of the research, to continue this way and increase training in intercultural matter of psychotherapists.
