Discernment in common and strategic decision-making: the integration of Jesuit provinces in Spain (2008–2014)

Abstract

En un contexto de profundo cambio institucional, cultural y demográfico, las instituciones jesuitas afrontan el reto de renovar su misión como proyectos de esperanza para el mundo. Este artículo examina el impacto del discernimiento en común (DC) en la toma de decisiones estratégicas de las organizaciones jesuitas, centrándose en la integración de las provincias jesuitas de España (2008–2014). Mediante un estudio de caso cualitativo y un análisis inspirado en la teoría fundamentada, se codificaron iterativamente diecisiete entrevistas en profundidad con líderes jesuitas implicados en la gobernanza. Los resultados indican que el DC funcionó menos como un método formal que como una actitud espiritual y organizativa compartida que configuró el contenido de las decisiones estratégicas, su ejecución a lo largo del tiempo y las prácticas de liderazgo. El estudio aporta perspectivas para universidades jesuitas e instituciones eclesiales interesadas en el liderazgo responsable, la estrategia alineada con la misión y una gobernanza orientada por la esperanza.In a context of profound institutional, cultural, and demographic change, Jesuit institutions are challenged to renew their mission as projects of hope for the world. This paper examines the impact of Discernment in Common (DC) on strategic decision-making in Jesuit organizations, focusing on the integration of the Jesuit provinces in Spain (2008–2014). Drawing on a qualitative case-study design and grounded theory-informed analysis, seventeen in-depth interviews with Jesuit leaders involved in governance were coded iteratively. Findings indicate that DC functioned less as a formal method and more as a shared spiritual and organizational attitude shaping the content of strategic decisions, their execution over time, and leadership practices. To interpret these dynamics, the study engages the framework of Circles of Apostolic Planning, which integrates discernment, strategy, and spirituality within a continuous and iterative process. The paper offers insights for Jesuit universities and ecclesial institutions seeking responsible leadership, mission-aligned strategy, and hope-driven governance in the twenty-first century.
