Medium-term technical and economic analysis of storage impacts on power systems under different scenarios with a high renewable share

Abstract

The thesis focuses on analyzing the roles of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) and their impact on power system operations under scenarios with a high renewable share. The integration of variable renewable energy sources (VRESs), like wind and solar, poses challenges due to their intermittent nature, necessitating greater flexibility in power systems. The thesis highlights the deficiencies in current models for representing power systems with substantial VRES integration, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches in analyzing the role of ESS, and regulatory reforms. A key aspect of the research is the development of a medium-term power system operation model, which allows considering several critical variabilities of distinct VRESs. Additionally, the developed model preserves the chronological sequence of input data and accurately models the operation of various ESSs, including batteries, Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH) and long-term Hydro Storage. This model is crucial for understanding the roles of ESSs in balancing the intermittency of renewable energy and for providing the flexibility and adequacy of the power system. The methodology introduced in this thesis assesses the contributions of different dispatchable technologies, to provide operational flexibility and adequacy to power systems. It includes an ex-ante analysis to determine flexibility requirements and an ex-post analysis that focuses on the contributions of technologies to system adequacy and flexibility. A key component of the methodology is the time series decomposition module, which uses frequency analysis to assess flexibility across various time scales. The thesis presents a detailed scenario analysis for 2030, based on the Spanish National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which targets 81% of electricity generation from VRES. These scenarios explore the role of ESSs in providing flexibility, and adequacy during critical periods (i.e., based on Net load demand) and the impact of varying water inflow scenarios on system adequacy. The research underscores the importance of considering new flexibility services to cover ramping shortage. Thus, the thesis explores the impact of introducing ramping services, highlighting how they influence the operation of ESSs and dispatchable technologies, ultimately contributing to system flexibility and adequacy. In summary, this thesis presents a comprehensive approach to modeling and assessing power system flexibility, particularly in renewable-based power systems, and offers valuable insights for policy, regulatory reforms, and technological advancements.
