Abstract

In it, Bernard draws a portrait of the papacy more concerned with self-knowledge and the practice of virtue (in line with the Platonic-Augustinian tradition) than with asserting its authority over secular powers. The virtue of consideration is proposed by Bernardo as a path towards an exercise of authority in the key of ministerium. An analysis of the Bernardian text shows that, although he participates in the medieval thesis of the two swords, he places it in a context where the spiritual aspect prevails over the political and the organizational, being a more faithful reader of Saint Augustine than the so-called political Augustinism. The thesis of the two swords, a good reflection of the movements of political Augustinism during the Middle Ages, thus finds a more suitable interpretative framework that provides an alternative to the claims made by Eugenio IV in his bull of 1439
