Abstract

Every day on the news, we can watch thousands of inhuman acts committed by other human beings. This escape our understanding. Although we know that something is wrong or immoral, we often violate these principles and carry out atrocities. Authors such as Albert Bandura with his Theory of moral disengagement, try to explain this phenomenon. According to this author, human beings are provided with a moral regulatory system that guides us both to behave humanely, and to avoid acting in an inhuman way. However, this tool can be deactivated (disabling these restrictions) through a series of mechanisms developed by Bandura in his studies: moral justification, euphemistic labeling, advantageous comparison, displacement of responsibility, diffusion of responsibility, ignoring or distorting the consequences of the action and dehumanize or blame the victims. The present paper aims to carry out a bibliographical review of this theory, analyzing and describing it in depth. After this analysis, it will be applied to concrete and a real case of an inhuman act perpetrated in the history of humanity: the launching of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The target of the study is to show the Bandura´s Theory of moral disengagement reflected in our reality, in order to better understand why this type of actions occurs.
