Abstract

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis was first developed in the 1920’s owing to the ideas of Edward Sapir, who was an anthropologist and linguist. Nevertheless, this theory was not completely developed until 1940, thanks to the linguistic studies of Benjamin Whorf. Its main ideas are that the world is conceived in a different way depending on the mother tongue and that language determines thought. Nowadays it is largely defended that all languages can be used to express the same ideas and that they are merely an instrument to communicate thoughts. However, the supporters of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis keep conducting studies on this topic to try to prove its veracity. In order to achieve this aim, a series of experiments have been carried out with speakers of different languages, including several exotic languages spoken in native civilizations from America and Australia. In such a way some curious differences between Western languages and some exotic languages have been discovered. For example, there is a civilization in Australia which, instead of describing special relations through right-left and in front of-behind axis, is guided thanks to the four cardinal directions (north, south, east and west), so every time they need to describe where is an object or a person they must know where north is. Furthermore, some civilizations use the same term to designate blue and green or, on the contrary, they do not have an only term for blue, but they use two different terms, depending on whether it is a light or a dark blue. But, which ones could be the implications for the thought of the speakers of these languages? Do these differences really cause differences in thought or are they due to differences in culture?
