Abstract

Online memes have conquered cyberspace. The ‘meme’ in the traditional sense by Richard Dawkins in 1976 is no longer understood the same way. Online memes, agreed as a globalization vernacular language, respond humorously to situations, emotions or others in an easy-to-consume format, while coexisting with traditional media. In this interconnected network, memes are presented as new cultural transmitters. For the purposes of this paper, an interdisciplinary theoretical framework is defined. It feeds off classical meme theories by Dawkins, Blackmore, or Dennet, while nourishing from current literature on online memes. A genetics’ allegory produces a threefold structure: phenotype, genotype and epigenetics. These three indicators are suggested to develop a theoretical model allowing the analysis of memes and the status of the town square in which they emerge from. Phenotype is linked to the observable features, what is visible, the container. Genotype is the meme’s content, the individual information from the collective cultural DNA that the meme contains: what is signified. Epigenetics is dichotomised into two contexts: virtual and face to face. It attempts to conceptualize the transformative interactions experienced by a meme. Virtual epigenetics is measured according to the memetic keys of cultural transmission: longevity, fecundity, fidelity. In the face to face context, a sociocritical analysis is required to examine the influence of an online memetic surge in the ‘real reality’. Once this language of analysis is created this approach is applied to our specific case study: the apparent lack of understanding between the two current queens of Spain epitomised in the Twitter’s 2018 April’s trending topic hashtag: #LetiziavsSofía. The memes’ surge created by this altercation offered a rich symbolic capital. The conclusions of this research encourage the reader to ponder about the implications of cyberculture, the limitation of methodologies and the individual responsibility being part of such emergent culture.
