The use of AI in the workplace: evidence from the European Working Conditions Survey 2024

Abstract

El trabajo analiza cómo la adopción de IA en el empleo afecta al esfuerzo y la salud de los trabajadores europeos, con datos de la EWCS 2024 y regresión ponderada por diseño muestral , sobre los marcos JD-R y ERI. Distingue tres tecnologías: IA generativa, plataformas de cooperación y robots colaborativos. El hallazgo central es que el efecto depende del tipo: las plataformas de cooperación, ligadas a la gestión algorítmica, intensifican el trabajo y se asocian a peor salud, mientras la IA generativa apenas muestra efectos. La heterogeneidad por género e intereses laborales resulta no significativa.

This study analyzes how the adoption of AI in the workplace affects the effort and health of European workers, using data from the 2024 EWCS and sample-design-weighted regression within the JD-R and ERI frameworks. It distinguishes three technologies: generative AI, collaborative platforms, and collaborative robots. The key finding is that the effect depends on the type of technology: collaboration platforms, linked to algorithmic management, intensify work and are associated with poorer health, while generative AI shows virtually no effects. Heterogeneity by gender and job interests is not significant.
