Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate in two groups of women with mastectomies (N=30) (Stage of early adulthood (25-45 years) and middle adulthood (45-65 years)), the possible differences associated with their age and their perception of their body image as well as the active and passive coping styles at each age, to face the: Physical Impact of Breast Cancer Treatments. Possible addition study the relationship between body image anda coping, and other variables studied in research (breast reconstruction, previous perception of their body image and employment status) variables regarding body image, coping strategies and age. The assessment instruments used were: «Body Image Scale» (S-BIS) and «Breaf Cope Inventory» (BCI), questionnaire on social demographic variables and completing a personally created not covered by the questionnaires (breast reconstruction and previous perception of their body image). The results confirmed that younger women had a greater distortion of their image, but no statistically significant difference was obtained regarding coping styles, both active and passive, and their possible relationship to the image. We found that women in their middle adulthood have fewer problems about their image (defined self-concept and identity) and a greater tendency to show more active coping styles (humor and acceptance) towards the situation, than women in early hood stage (active coping and planning). Regarding the variables added to the study, we found statistically significant difference between body image and perception before surgery and treatments in both age groups, and between active coping and employment status.
