Abstract

The Rorschach test is one of the most commonly used tests in the area of the study of personality. Due to the early death of its author, Herman Rorschach, it has been used for a long time without a rigorous methodology and based on different coding systems. The most famous are the "Five Greatest Rorschach Systems" developed by Beck (1961), Hertz (1970), Klopfer (1942), Piotrowski (1957) and Rapaport-Schafer (1946) between 1936 and 1957. From a synthesis of the most relevant things of these five systems, the Comprehensive System of Exner (1969) emerged, which has been the reference system of the last few years. Nowadays, the Comprehensive System is the most used together with the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS), most recently published by Meyer, Viglione, Mihura, Erard and Erdberg in 2001, and the French system. With so many correction methods and so many currents of study, many professionals in the world of psychology and psychiatry question both the validity and reliability of the test. This paper will review the different criticisms it has received and the responses of those who defend its use.
