Trabajo de Celia Camarero

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the study of reverse translation of audiovisual humor through the analysis of the translation of a scene from the Spanish television series ``Aquí no hay quien viva´´. The aim of this study is to identify the main difficulties involved in translating a humorous audiovisual product from Spanish into English and to assess the strategies used to transfer the humorous and cultural elements of the source text. To achieve this objective, the chosen scene was first transcribed and later translated into English. Based on this translation, a translation analysis was carried out focusing on verbal humor, colloquial expressions and cultural references present in the scene. The analysis takes a close look to the challenges involved in transferring these humorous and cultural elements into English, as well as the solutions adopted to preserve both their communicative function and their humorous effect in the target language. The results show that the main difficulties are related to the lack of direct equivalences between languages, cultural differences, and the need to preserve both the spontaneity of the discourse and fidelity to the original message in the target language. Furthermore, the study concludes that adaptation, equivalence and reformulation are among the most effective translation strategies for dealing with this type of translation task.
