Teaching immigrant children in Spain : a case study based on a charter school in the Vallecas district

Abstract

A medida que aumenta la migración en el país, debemos encontrar alternativas para su adaptación al sistema educativo y el profesorado es claveImmigration in Spain has undergone many changes in the last thirty years; With the increase in migrants in the country, the composition of the student body in Spanish schools has also changed. The linguistic, cultural, and often economic barrier presents itself as a challenge for Spanish teachers in the Community of Madrid, who have to respond to the educational needs of first-generation students in the process of integration. To explore the weaknesses and strengths in the care of these students, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the teaching staff, analyzing how the teaching staff copes with this situation. The present investigation exposes that the teaching staff of the Gredos San Diego Vallecas Educational Center in the Early Childhood Education stage (3 to 6 years old) do not feel competent to carry out a teaching program adapted to their intercultural environment. Professionals report that the existing resources and the necessary training are not sufficient to provide individualized support to migrant students. The results point to the negative effects that these challenges can have for students of foreign origin. As migration increases in the country, we must find alternatives for its adaptation to the educational system and teachers are key.
