Abstract

Electricity market prices change continuously because they depend on numerous factors, including weather conditions. Moreover, the Spanish electricity system comprises several electricity markets, each with its own price. In this context, arbitrage opportunities arise. This study investigates three price forecasting models for the Spanish Day-Ahead Market and Intraday Market 1, with the aim of developing an arbitrage strategy between these two markets. The primary objective of this project is to provide ENGIE with a foundation for future work. Since studying forecasting models and developing different arbitrage strategies require a considerable investment of time, ENGIE wants a preliminary analysis in which several forecasting models and arbitrage strategies are evaluated. This analysis is intended to serve as a starting point for further improving both the forecasting models and the arbitrage strategy. The forecasting models evaluated are Linear Regression, SARIMAX, and LightGBM. Regarding arbitrage, both simple strategies that did not rely on price forecasts and more sophisticated strategies incorporating forecasted prices were evaluated. All the proposed strategies are based on determining the sign of the price difference between the two markets. The results show that LightGBM is the most suitable forecasting model. Furthermore, it was concluded that incorporating price forecasts improves the performance of the arbitrage strategy.
