Análisis de Mercados Financieros Internacionales

Abstract

This thesis studies whether adding liquid alternatives, specifically a managed futures trend-following strategy represented by the SG Trend Index, can improve the risk-return profile of a global 60/40 portfolio for a private-banking investor. The starting point is that the traditional 60/40 allocation has long been considered a benchmark for diversification, but it may fail when equities and bonds decline at the same time, especially during periods of high inflation, aggressive rate hikes, or severe market stress. The analysis investigates whether allocating 10% to 20% to trend following can strengthen portfolio resilience. The methodology compares three portfolios: 60/40, 55/35/10, and 50/30/20, using monthly data from December 1999 to January 2026. The study uses MSCI ACWI Net Total Return (EUR) as the equity proxy, Bloomberg Global Aggregate Bond Index (EUR Hedged) for fixed income, and the SG Trend Index for liquid alternatives. It also includes semiannual rebalancing and approximate implementation costs, which makes the backtest more realistic. The results show that adding trend following improves portfolio efficiency: the 50/30/20 portfolio achieves a higher annualized return, lower volatility, and better Sharpe and Sortino ratios than the standard 60/40 portfolio. It also meaningfully reduces maximum drawdown, CVaR, and recovery time after losses. The main conclusion is that including liquid alternatives such as trend following is beneficial, especially because it provides protection in high-volatility regimes and in episodes like 2022, when the trend-enhanced portfolio fell much less than the traditional 60/40 allocation. However, the thesis also stresses that this is not a free improvement, since it increases complexity and tracking error, so the allocation must be adapted to the investor’s profile and objectives.
