Abstract

The article suggests a description of loneliness among young people, firstly reviewing the different concepts that can be used when talking about loneliness. Various empirical research studies of the prevalence and profiles of unwanted loneliness in the youth population are analysed to describe personal, family, community and environmental circumstances related to this phenomenon. The life transitions that occur during youth and the transition to early adulthood that may entail greater risk in the field of interpersonal relationships are also considered. Finally, the paper summarises the principle approaches and contents of initiatives to combat unwanted loneliness in young people, making a series of recommendations in this area. Key aspects are, on the one hand, the need to put the person at the centre of the intervention, adapting it to the experience of loneliness that each person lives in a unique way and, on the other, the community dimension of social action, aimed at generating meaningful relationships that promote the sense of belonging to the community.
