Abstract

This Bachelor's Thesis analyzes the factors that determine the reputation of Spanish companies in Colombia, a particularly significant market given that Spain is the country's second-largest foreign investor in terms of accumulated investment stock. The study draws on the theoretical framework of the Country of Origin Effect (COE) alongside literature on corporate reputation, image, and trust. Building on this foundation, a causal model is proposed to examine how the behavior of Spanish companies in Colombia affects their perceived image and, through it, trust and ultimately reputation. Four dimensions are analyzed: respect for the local environment (RP), value contributed to the country's development (Vab), corporate social responsibility (SRS), and the respect shown by managers toward the local environment (RPE). The empirical analysis is based on a sample of 150 Colombian residents. The results confirm five of the six hypotheses, with considerable explanatory power: the model accounts for 55.1% of the variance in corporate image (R² = 0.551). The factors carrying the greatest weight are managerial respect for the local environment (RPE) and the company's institutional respect for the host country (RP). The hypothesis related to CSR, by contrast, receives weaker support, suggesting that this factor alone is insufficient to improve a company's image unless accompanied by coherent and visible behavior within the local context. Taken together, the findings indicate that reputation depends more on day-to-day conduct in the host country than on a company's size or international presence, with implications for both academic research and corporate management practice.
