Abstract

In this research work, we will try to study what really represents the impact of the Corporate Social Responsibility of the major European oil companies operating in Nigeria. In an increasingly globalized world, it is legitimate to wonder if the recent emergence of the Corporate Social Responsibility has reduced significantly the inequalities and injustices regarding oil exploitation in this region of the world. In order to develop this work, after clearly define the framework of the study, we will focus on the different CSR reports of major European oil groups in Nigeria. We will discuss the commitments and initiatives established by multinationals in favour of socio-economic development and environmental protection. Moreover, we will study the point of view of the critics of these multinationals, NGOs specialized in the defence of human rights or the environment, and several researchers dealing with this issue. The conclusions that can be drawn from this research seem to support the thesis of the study: the emergence of the CSR of European oil groups would not permit to improve significantly in the medium term living conditions both environmental and socioeconomics in Nigeria.
