Abstract

The present work consists of a qualitative approach to specialized interpretation in the field of video games. Given a clear lack of documentation and previous research, this work is concerned with establishing a theoretical foundation for future research, as well as promoting interest in this field. We consulted the literature relevant to the specialization and language of videogames, as well as Spanish and European reports that demonstrate the economic importance of videogames. We argue that this economic importance could be accompanied by an increased demand for related language services. In addition, five relevant interviews were conducted. We were able to talk to three interpreters with experience in this field (two English-Spanish, one Japanese-Spanish), a journalist specializing in video games, and a video game director and event organizer. Through interviews with people involved in this type of interpretation, we seek to confirm a series of hypotheses. The main hypothesis is: is there a demand for interpreting services? How should the aspiring video game interpreter carry out his or her interpreting? What specific characteristics should be taken into account? Your insights will help us to establish an approximation of possible expectations and difficulties, the degree of specialization and the most relevant interpreting modality.
