Abstract
The emergence of the trilateral security alliance between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States called "AUKUS" has brought about a change in the regional security architecture in the South Pacific. The main objective of this agreement is greater military coordination and cooperation, as well as providing Australia with nuclear-powered submarines in order to strengthen Australia's naval capabilities and confront Chinese expansionism in the region. Therefore, the Western powers seek through this alliance to increase and consolidate their presence in the region as a counterweight to Chinese influence. Since the announcement of this agreement in September 2021, the reactions of the South Asian states have been mixed, with those who strongly support this agreement and those who see it as a way to further increase tension in the long-running conflict in the South China Sea. The objective of this Bachelor’s Degree dissertation is to analyze the impact of this alliance in the South China Sea region and the security dilemma it poses, its confluence with the "QUAD" alliance, the reactions of the South Asian states to the AUKUS security agreement, as well as to determine if we are facing a new arms race in the region.
