Modelos de Valoración de Activos Financieros

Abstract

This Bachelor's Thesis conducts a quantitative analysis of the joint dynamics of the SPY ETF (which tracks the S&P 500) and the VXX ETN (short-term VIX implied-volatility exposure) over the 2018-2026 period, aiming to design and evaluate a systematic pair-trading strategy between the two assets. The study builds a rigorous econometric framework combining Engle-Granger and Johansen cointegration tests, ARIMA and VAR models, GARCH and EGARCH conditional volatility models, DCC-GARCH dynamic conditional correlation, and the calibration of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The results confirm a strong, persistent negative correlation (−0.75, reaching −0.96 during market-stress episodes) but rule out strict cointegration in levels, owing to the structural downward drift of the VXX caused by the systematic contango of VIX futures. Nevertheless, the spread constructed with a dynamic hedge ratio restores stationarity and mean reversion, albeit slow (a half-life of 186 trading days). Walk-forward backtesting yields favourable out-of-sample performance (annualized return of +12.3%, a Sharpe ratio of +1.21 and a Calmar ratio of +1.28, exceeding that of SPY), with a smaller maximum drawdown (−9.6% versus −19.2%). However, performance is critically dependent on the prevailing volatility regime: the strategy is profitable in intermediate regimes but loses money under high volatility, refuting one of the initial hypotheses. The thesis concludes by proposing methodological extensions, in particular the incorporation of a regime filter that would suspend trading when implied volatility exceeds a given threshold, alongside richer cost modelling and the use of VIX-futures data.
