Abstract

The agricultural and livestock sector is one of the sectors with the greatest impact on climate change, both in Spain and globally. In fact, in Spain, emissions due to the agricultural and livestock sector account for 11% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For this reason and due to the little attention, this sector receives in the fight against climate change, this study has been conducted. The main objective of this study is to provide agricultural and livestock measures and techniques that reduce GHG emissions from this sector in Spain. These emission reduction measures will be necessary to develop different situations of GHG emissions, after the implementation of the measures. The results specified with the current demand for agricultural and livestock products and the implementation of the measures proposed in the study show that it is difficult to meet the emission targets established in the PNIEC by 2030; but more easily for 2020 and 2025. However, the 2030 objectives are not far off and necessary to start actions to achieve these objectives. In addition, if a change of diet is favored by the Spanish government by replacing beef, sheep and pork with poultry, these objectives can easily be achieved. A reduction in the consumption of dairy products would also be beneficial However, the great obstacle for implementing the emission reduction measures of the agricultural and livestock sector is its very high cost in € / tonne CO2 reduced compared to other sectors. The Spanish government is more likely to incline due to a variation in diets than by the implementation of the measures.
