Abstract

One of the most criticized aspects of Edward Said’s Orientalism is its remarkable neglect of German Oriental studies. This article examines German Orientalism in order to reconsider Said’s conclusions, focusing particularly on representations of India. It explores German Romantic enthusiasm for Indian culture through authors such as Herder and Friedrich Schlegel, together with the positions of Goethe, Schelling, and Heine. It then considers the reception of India in Schopenhauer and, above all, Hegel. The article argues that the philosophy of history provides a crucial framework for understanding German Orientalism. By placing India within a historical sequence ultimately oriented toward Europe, German historical thought contributed decisively to a hierarchical and Eurocentric representation of the East and reveals a dimension largely absent from Said’s original analysis.
