Reframing social innovation and other neighboring phenomena from a qualitative cases analysis.

Abstract

Podemos afirmar que la innovación social es un término frecuentemente utilizado (y abusado) pero también que no todos los que lo usan se refieren a las mismas cosas. Podría parecer que la innovación social es la suma del significado de dos palabras: innovación y social; pero, como mostraré con algunos ejemplos, no todo lo que es innovador es social, ni todo lo que es social es innovador. Hasta hace poco, el término innovación social ha sido un cajón de sastre en el que había espacio para casi todo lo que era innovador y social, sin embargo, aquellos de nosotros que creemos que la innovación social tiene un peso específico en el futuro de la humanidad, estamos convencidos de que es hora de homogeneizar este término Durante los años 2013-2018, y para la investigación de mi tesis doctoral, he identificado, compilado, codificado, comparado y analizado miles de datos relacionados con innovación e innovación social en España. A partir de este análisis cualitativo, realizado siguiendo la Grounded Theory, surgieron cientos de casos de innovación social que me permitieron, entre otras cosas, determinar un nuevo marco para la innovación social, una nueva definición del término innovación social, así como su distinción de otros fenómenos contiguos, como la RSE, las TIC, el emprendimiento social y el mundo de las patentes y las invenciones. Este documento pretende llenar el vacío existente en ausencia de una definición única y actualizada de lo que se entiende por innovación social.We can affirm that social innovation is a frequently used (and abused) term but also that not all those who use it refer to the same things. It might seem that social innovation is the sum of the meaning of two words: innovation and social; but, as I will show with some examples, not everything that is innovative is social, nor all that is social is innovative. Until recently the term social innovation has been a catch-all in which there was room for almost everything that was innovative and social, however those of us who believe that social innovation has a specific weight in the future of humanity, we are convinced that it is time to homogenize this term. During the years 2013-2018, and for the research of my doctoral thesis, I have identified, compiled, codified, compared and analyzed thousands of data related to social innovation and social innovation in Spain. From this qualitative analysis, conducted following the Grounded Theory, hundreds of social innovation case studies emerged that allowed me, among other things, to determine a new framework for social innovation, a new definition of the term social innovation, as well as its distinction from other phenomena adjoining, such as CSR, ICT, social entrepreneurship and the world of patents and inventions. This paper aims to fill the existing void in the absence of a unique and updated definition of what is meant by social innovation.
