Abstract

Genocide is the most extreme form of violence: an act aimed at the total destruction of a human group based on identity, origin, religion, or culture. In today’s information-saturated world, the concept has been distorted and often misused to describe events that do not align with its true meaning. In The Era of Genocides, the author—a professor at ICADE and expert in International Relations—offers a clear and precise overview that distinguishes genocide from crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. The book explains their characteristics, impact, and place within international law. From the Holocaust and the persecution of the Armenian people to more recent cases such as Rwanda, Srebrenica, Darfur, the Rohingya, the Yazidis, Ukraine, and Palestine, the book combines historical narrative with the evolution of the international legal and judicial framework. It explores the roots and consequences of these crimes and the mechanisms for prosecuting them. The work also examines major milestones in international justice, from the Nuremberg Trials to the creation and functioning of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the role of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Through this analysis, it reveals the complex struggle against impunity and the dilemmas of a global world seeking to protect fundamental human rights amid the political interests of major powers and the unacceptable practice of double standards. The history of genocide is not just a chronicle of past horrors but also a vital guide to understanding current conflicts and the challenges of global justice. It is an essential text for jurists, journalists, students, and any reader committed to defending human rights and preventing future crimes. Understanding the past is not merely an act of remembrance—it is the key to preventing history from repeating itself.
