Abstract

This study is an analysis of the electoral participation in the Community of Madrid in order to understand why the right-wing vote is more mobilized than the left-wing vote. The division of the vote is very noticeable in this territory, with the north oriented towards a more conservative vote and with greater mobilization, as opposed to the south, which is more left-wing in nature and with a lower turnout in elections. In addition, a much more conservative vote has recently emerged in the territories furthest from the capital, which surround the entire region. Turnout in elections can be influenced by various factors such as the tactical vote, differential abstention, the bandwagon effect or the underdog effect, among others. In order to analyze the profile of the Madrid voter and draw clear conclusions, a survey has been created to collect data focused on the knowledge of the polls, the assessment of Madrid political leaders, electoral participation, income or ideology of the respondents. The analysis of the results shows that it cannot be proved that income is the cause of the low turnout, but that it does influence the ideology of the people of Madrid. Therefore, other factors precipitate this electoral mobilization or demobilization in some sectors: the enormous rejection by the most conservative of left-wing economic policies, despair about politics or the perception of corruption in the system. In addition, during this study, early elections were held in the Community of Madrid in 2021 following a government crisis, so an analysis of the results was carried out after the victory of the right-wing parties with more mobilized voters.
