Abstract

This work computationally studies positive decompositions of the motive of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles over a smooth complex projective curve. Given a curve C of genus g, the moduli space M(r,L) parametrizes stable vector bundles of rank r with fixed determinant L. Its motive lives in the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives, and the central question is whether it can be expressed as a polynomial with non-negative integer coefficients in the Lefschetz motive L and the powers λk([C]) of the motive of the curve. This conjecture is motivated by the relationship between derived categories and motives predicted by Orlov, and by Narasimhan's conjecture on semiorthogonal decompositions of D(M(r,L)). For r=2 and r=3 the decomposition is known; this work addresses the case r≥4. Three search algorithms are implemented in Python on the motives library. The first, greedy, finds the unique decomposition when indices k do not exceed g. The second, based on breadth-first search, finds 240 distinct decompositions for r=4, g=2, proving non-uniqueness. The third uses Hodge diamonds as a heuristic to guide a depth-first search, obtaining at least one positive decomposition for r=5, g=2. The results provide solid computational evidence in favour of the conjecture.
