Abstract

At the one hundred years anniversary of the division of spheres of influence between London and Paris, the debate over how far the Middle East is made up of "tribes with flags" confined to a map that has less and less meaning. On May 6, 1916, Great Britain and France drew a line in the sand that during a century has determined the map of the Middle East, now more questioned than ever. Known as the Sykes-Picot Pact, that secret agreement with Russia's participation aspired to partition the entire region and to capitalize on the great power vacuum posed by the predictable collapse of the Ottoman Empire after its defeat in World War I. In retrospect, the new states formulated from the great Turkish Caliphate, with arbitrary borders drawn frequently with suspicious straight lines, have more than demonstrated their artificial nature and chronic inability to generate vertebrate national projects.
