Abstract

This Bachelor's Thesis proposes the development of a predictive methodology to assess voltage vulnerability in a power system under scenarios of high renewable variability. The energy transition and the partial replacement of conventional synchronous generation by renewable resources connected through power electronics modify the available reactive power support and may alter the voltage profiles of the network. In this context, the project aims to build a predictive voltage vulnerability atlas for the IEEE 118-bus test system, combining physics-based simulations through alternating current optimal power flow (AC-OPF) with machine learning techniques. The methodology is based on the generation of operating scenarios involving variations in demand, solar generation, wind generation, time of day and a limited set of contingencies. For each scenario, an AC-OPF is solved in PandaPower and key metrics are extracted, including the minimum system voltage, the most vulnerable buses and the voltage security margin M_V. Machine learning models, especially Random Forest, are then trained to predict vulnerability indicators from the scenario variables. The final objective is to obtain a fast and interpretable tool capable of identifying critical scenarios, detecting spatial patterns of voltage vulnerability and evaluating the model's generalization capability in extreme regions of the operating space, such as high solar penetration and low demand conditions.
