Abstract

In actual society suspension bridges are structures os modern engineering in which efficiency is combined with fairly pronounced nonlinear behaviour. This nonlinearity is based in the components that conform the bridge, their geometry and the connection between them. As a consequence, in order to predict the structural behaviour of the structural, both static and dinamic, it is required to use numerical models able to consider this geometric nonlinearity. Furthermore, comparing this model against physical reality by means of scale models is precisely what distinguishes the model as either a theoretical calculation or a reliable engineering tool. The main objective of this Final Degree Project is to develop and validate a numerical model. Howerver there is a dobule goal, firstly to build and characterize the scale model of a suspension bridge, secondly developing that numerical model with Matlab, supported by the AFECTOS library. The numerical model in question is two-dimensional and capable of solving the nonlinear static analysis, the modal analysis, and predicting the dynamic response of the structure under different external excitations. In order to validate the numerical model several types of experimental tests have been carried out on the scale model. For the static analysis, load cells were installed on the bars that the model predicted to be the most heavily demanded. Later during the analysis we measure their axial tension while applying static loads. The maximum vertical displacement in the middle of the span is also measured when applying the static loads. On the other hand, in the dynamic domain, step- and impulse-type load tests are carried out. For every test the time-domain response of the structure is recorder by an accelerometer. By this, we can identify and calculate the natural frequency of the first vibration mode, as well as the structural damping, by means of the logarithmic decrement. One of the most relevant aspects of the work is that the fundamental frequency predicted by the model for the first vibration mode, $f_1 = 4{,}64$\,Hz, is bigger than the maximun of the interval formed by the two frequency values obtained independently from the experimental tests, $3{,}53$\,Hz in the step test and $3{,}99$\,Hz in the impulse test, this confirms the hipothesis acquired, the model subestimates the real mass of the structure. The mean of the relative errors in both cases rounds 20\,\%, establishing the dynamic part as the one capable of representing the actual behaviour with the greatest accuracy. This constitutes a cross-validation confirming that the dispersion of the experimental tests originates in the nonlinearity of the structure itself, since the stiffness is a function of the oscillation amplitude. Beyond the scale model itself or the model's capacity to represent actual behaviour, the work highlights the importance of certain structural parameters such as the prestress of cables or hangers, the structural damping, or the role of mass when calculating natural frequencies. Likewise, it opens up several lines of future work, mainly aimed at extending the model to three dimensions, incorporating geometric nonlinearity into the dynamic analysis, or implementing a tool that allows prestress to be considered in the static part.
